Ronnie O'Sullivan finished his 888.com World Snooker Championship match against Mark Williams in glorious style by making a record ninth 147 maximum break.
The Crucible crowd erupted as O'Sullivan potted the final ball of his magical maximum, the seventh made at the Crucible and O'Sullivan's third - he is the only player to make more than one at Sheffield.
The Rocket has over-taken Stephen Hendry as snooker's maximum man, having surpassed the Scot's record of eight. Chigwell's 32-year-old O'Sullivan has now made three this season, following 147s in the Northern Ireland Trophy and one in the deciding frame of his Maplin UK Championship semi-final against Mark Selby.
This one came in the la...

Ronnie O'Sullivan made the seventh maximum break of his career at the Northern Ireland Trophy - and set an amazing new record in the process.
The maximum came in the fifth frame of his 5-2 defeat of Ali Carter at the Waterfront Hall and is worth a £20,000 bonus plus £2,000 for the top break if it's not equalled this week.
But perhaps more remarkably, O'Sullivan made five centuries - the first time that has ever been achieved in a ranking event best-of-nine match.
Four players had previously made four centuries in a best-of-nine: Peter Ebdon, Tom Ford, Stephen Hendry and Shaun Murphy.
He warmed up with 108, 122 and 107 in taking a 3-1 lead before the magical maximum came. Carter pulled...

China's Ding Junhui potted a maximum 147 break during his second round match at the United Kingdom Championship. Meanwhile Ding's heroics couldn't prevent him falling 7-1 behind against John Higgins as the former world champion, 3-1 up at the mid-session interval, won four frames on the bounce. Ding, who won the the UK title in 2005, was trailing the Scot by 2-0 when he sank 15 reds and blacks in the third frame before clearing the colours.
The 21-year-old appeared understandably nervous as he approached the landmark.
But after stepping away from the table, for a drink of water, Ding potted the pink and the final black to the delight of the crowd before being congratulated by Higgins.
Din...

"It was nice to give the crowd something to cheer about at the end," said O'Sullivan. "This is a great venue and a great tournament but my snooker tonight was not great, it was so poor. I played 16 poor frames but everyone now will be talking about the 147 so I feel like I've cheated, or taken a short cut. I'd rather have won 9-3, playing solid and not making any unforced errors.
"The first black in the 147 was a blind shot but it wasn't as hard as it looked. It was 8-8 and I felt like I wanted to get something out of the game, to go out in a blaze of glory. Once I got to 40 I decided to go for it, and I felt a few butterflies which was good.
"It's nice to get to eight 147s, I'd like to ...

Stephen Maguire potted a memorable 147 as he battled his way past Ryan Day to reach the China Open final.
The Glaswegian held his nerve to clinch a dramatic 6-5 victory over Welshman Day, winning the match on the blue in a final-frame decider.
But it was in the second frame that the Scot wrote his name into the record books with the first-ever clearance in a ranking event in Asia.
He now faces Shaun Murphy after the Englishman's 6-3 win over Mark Selby.
It was not plain sailing for Murphy, who battled back from 3-2 behind to beat compatriot and this season's Masters and Welsh Open winner Selby at the Beijing Sports Gymnasium.
Selby pocketed breaks of 54, 95 and 132 for a 3-2 lead, ...

Stephen Maguire scored the first-ever 147 in the 2008 World Snooker China Open, the maximum score for a single break, to beat Ryan Day 6-5 in the semifinals on Saturday.
The break came in the second frame of Maguire against Ryan Day. Day made a mistake in the opening shot to spread the red balls perfectly. Maguire took the chance to piked them up, taking all 15 with blacks to score the second 147 of his career.
"It was a good match to be involved in and it was obviously a bit tense at the end. It was good to get over the line," admitted Maguire.
"It's brilliant, apart from winning tournaments it is the best feeling ever. They don't come along very often and potting the last black was j...

Ronnie O'Sullivan declared that winning the 888.com World Snooker Championship was his greatest buzz in snooker, and hopes that he can add to his tally of three Crucible crowns.
The Rocket completed an 18-8 defeat of Ali Carter tonight to become only the third player -- after Steve Davis and Stephen Hendry -- to lift the trophy aloft three times at the Crucible.
"It's a real buzz to win it. There is no bigger tournament, this is our pinnacle, it's our greatest stage," said the 32-year-old from Chigwell. "I've got three now and I would like to win more. I wouldn't like to put a number on it because that would be very foolish of me. There are a lot of hungry players out who are also very eag...
