DPA Projection Impresses Theatre Tech Director

 <length_seconds>57</length_seconds>

Jones Hall in downtown Houston is famous for its amazing architecture
and hosting some of the worlds best productions.

We spoke to one of the stage managers, who says Divine Performing Arts
stop in Houston was unique.

[Mark Bumgardenner, Backstage Manager]:
The way they incorporated it with the back drop and the video
projectors and the scenery behind it that was constantly changing that
matched the costumes that matched the whole set and then the live
orchestra, I mean you can't, thats rare, you can't find that anywhere.
Thats excellent.

Over the last 14 years, he has overseen performances like
Disneys Lion King and Jerry Seinfeld the comedian, which involve
complex backdrops and lighting.

But Divine Performing Arts, he says is different.

[Mark Bumgardenner, Backstage Manager]:
"Because the projectors were very cutting edge if you will, as far as how they how they incorporated the video in with the
dance and the costumes, I mean it was just awesome, its just beautiful
they way they did that. I mean it was so minimal yet so effective.

Divine Performing Arts Shine in Lone Star State

 <length_seconds>82</length_seconds>

STORY:
Divine Performing Arts has found a receptive audience in Houston.
But its not just its entertainment value that is appreciated--people
walking away from the performances with a firmer grasp on Eastern traditions.

[Prof. Jerry Chi, Business School Director]:
"Watching this evenings performance I felt that it was really a
wonderful opportunity, letting Western society understand that Chinese
people also have this great, wondrous culture. The performances were all
beautiful, and extraordinarily professional. I also felt it was really
moving, and the details of the performances were all smoothly and
correctly done."

[Professor Moli, Baylor College of Medicine]:
"Chinese culture spread through the silk road all over the world, and
thats might, you might see it all around the world."

Some feel the show expresses a more profound meaning.

[Judy Robinson, Auctioneers Texas Representative]:
"Very spiritual. Crossed all the lines of friendship, among all the
countries and really showed us the heart of China. The wonderful,
wonderful heart of the beautiful people of China."

Others think the show encourages cultural exchange.

[William Yeh, United Central Bank Vice President]:
"Tonights show was extremely splendid, as in previous years, you know,
it is such a great contribution to the spreading of our Chinese cultural
traditions."

Divine Performing Arts will travel to 80 cities, with shows coming up in
San Francisco, Toronto and Boston.

Chinese Rights Campaigner Applauds Divine Performance

 <length_seconds>94</length_seconds>

STORY:
The Chinese New Splendor has left Jonathan Cao, from the Chinese Coalition for Citizens Rights, thinking about all that China has lost under communist rule.

[Jonathan Cao, Chinese Coalition for Citizens' Rights]:
"In China we dont have freedom of speech; we dont have freedom of association. We dont have freedom of religion and freedom of religious belief."

He says Chinese people used to value virtues and have high moral standards, but the last 60 years of communism have made some Chinese pursue personal gain at the expense of others, culminating in poisoning children for profit with the melamine-milk scandal.

[Jonathan Cao, Chinese Coalition for Citizens Rights]:
"What we want, what we dream is the kind of society that is a replica of the Tang Dynasty."

He says since the Cultural Revolution, the communist party has used music, art and theater to glorify itself, using nationalism as a tool to maintain control.

[Jonathan Cao, Chinese Coalition for Citizens Rights]:
"The content of the performance is filled with gratitude to the communist party, to their rule. And they are trying to persuade you, to convince you if there is no communist party in China people are still living in a very backward society."

He says Divine Performing Arts presents a very different kind of show, instead emphasizing strong moral values, respect for family and following heaven's law.

He was very touched by one of the Divine Performing Arts contemporary pieces, about the persecution of Falun Gong.

[Jonathan Cao, Chinese Coalition for Citizens Rights]:
"Tears were in my eyes, the one, the sacred path."

Chinese Exchange Student Raves over DPA

ANCHOR:
And as you may know, the Divine Performing Arts is on a worldwide tour. Today we introduce you to one student from mainland China who says the show makes him proud to be Chinese.

STORY:
Tang Chunhui is a student from mainland China. He first saw Divine Performing Arts last weekend in Brooklyn, New York.

[Tang Chunhui, Mainland Chinese Student]:
"The performance was just like the Chinese name, Shenyun. It's something utterly beautiful, and to describe this performing company, I'd just say it's filled with a sense of art.

His experience watching the show, he says, made him feel proud of Chinas ancient heritage.

[Tang Chunhui, Mainland Chinese Student]:
"I think it's a pleasure to be able to come here and watch. I felt very tranquil sitting there, and you know, the programs were full of traditional Chinese culture, letting me feel, as I sat and watched, just feel so very proud to be Chinese."

Tang says Divine Performing Arts conveyed the essence of traditional Chinese culture for a mostly Western audience.

[Tang Chunhui, Mainland Chinese Student]:
"Coming here today to watch this show in New York City, it's just illuminated to me that our Chinese culture is so ancient, and can be passed down to this day, and influence Western culture as well. On this very stage, it's having a real influence on Western culture."

This weekend the show will be in three North American cities Toronto, Boston and San Fransico.

Athens Police Protest

 <length_seconds>88</length_seconds>

ANCHOR:
In Athens, an unknown gunmen shot a 21 year-old policeman who is now in serious condition. Hundreds of police officers and their families gathered outside to protest against the shooting.

STORY:
The officer was with a group of riot police guarding the Ministry of Culture when at least two weapons were fired at the officers, striking him three times.

Police officers said they were frustrated by the lack of clear initiative by politicians, on what the role of the police should be on whether it should be more or less heavy handed during street riots.

[Yannis Makris, Police Union President]:
"We want to condemn this political tolerance. During all this phenomenon, there was no political voice, there was no clear voice from political authorities saying what kind of police force we want."

The attack on the officer took place early in the morning on Monday in a neighborhood where the 15-year-old teenager, Alex Grigoropoulos, was killed on December 6th. The teenagers death prompted clashes with police and riots in the streets for weeks, and caused hundreds of millions of Euros in damage to shops, cars and buildings.

Police suspect that the new leftist group Public Action or the left-wing urban guerrilla group, "Revolutionary Struggle" could be responsible for the shooting.

Tensions remain high in the Greek capital during weeks of rioting. The public has criticized the government for allowing the vandalism to take place with little police intervention.

Bolivia: Heavy Rains Block Transportation

 <length_seconds>81</length_seconds>

ANCHOR:
Transportation between Eastern and Western Bolivia is suspended due to damage caused by heavy rains. Hundreds of people have been left stranded for days.

STORY:
Heavy rains have been wreaking havoc in Bolivia. A major road connecting eastern and western Bolivia will remain blocked for at least another five days.

Hundreds of stranded passengers decided leave the area on foot, but many have nowhere to go.

Crews have been working to clear the highway and build walls to contain the disaster. But rain continues to unleash mounds of asphalt, increasing the affected area from 50 to 250 meters.

About one thousand vehicles have been stuck on the route, trapped by mud and large rocks.

[Jose Eizaguirre, Stranded Traveler]:
"We have been here all night, since seven in the evening when we left. We have to go to work somehow."

The eastern province of Santa Cruz is the economic and political heartland of the country, holding Bolivia's key agricultural and oil resources.

Approximately 600 of the vehicles are large transport trucks.

It will take at least a week to clear and repair the route sufficiently for larger vehicles to get out.

Some smaller vehicles have managed to move, but later encounter more blockages a few meters down the road.

Every years seasonal rains have caused road closures in Bolivia, but this year
Its even more severe.

[Julio Chuquimia, Stranded Traveler]:
"Everyone knows that every year this road is in ruins. So we are waiting for the rain. But what are we going to do afterwards, the season hasn´t really begun yet?"

One death has been confirmed of a man caught by a current in the Chapare River that runs alongside the highway.

Berlin Zoo Feels the Chill

 <length_seconds>93</length_seconds>

ANCHOR:
Berlin Zoo's celebrity polar bear Knut feels right at home. He is enjoying Germany's current cold snap, but other zoo animals are less fond of the frosty weather. Zookeepers say some animals like antelopes have to be kept indoors so they don't slip on the ice and hurt themselves.

STORY:
It's perfect weather for polar bears.

And Knut, Berlin Zoo's most famous resident, could think of nothing better than splashing about in his icy pool as temperatures in the German capital hovered around minus eight degrees Celsius.

Knut wasn't the only one enjoying the Arctic conditions.

And elephants can also have fun in the snow, says Andre Schuele, a vet at Berlin Zoo.

[Andre Schuele, Berlin Zoo Vet]:
"As it isn't windy or raining at the moment, they can be let out too. But their well-heated house is waiting for them, where after a few hours they can go and warm themselves up."

But the zoo says other animals don't find frosty weather quite so agreeable - and need special looking after when temperatures plummet.

[Andre Schuele, Berlin Zoo Vet]:
"There are other animals which we have to keep inside, such as antelopes, which make big jumps and run in zig zags around the outdoor enclosures, so there's the danger that they could slip on the large iced-over surfaces and even break a leg."

Animals like the antelope will have to stay indoors for a bit longer.

Freezing conditions are expected to continue for the next few days which will make Knut and his polar bear friends very happy.

Market Report- Company Asia Japan

 <length_seconds>105</length_seconds>

ANCHOR:
For our market report today, let's take a look at a report on how Japan's economy is doing. Already in a recession, business turnover for some industries, like cars, was the worst on record. it was also a bad month for department and retail stores. Here's that report.

STORY:
The slowdown in the world's No.2 economy has been staggering and nowhere more so than at its sales counters.

Already in recession, December turnover for businesses like cars was the worst on record, while some of its $72-billion department and retail stores saw the biggest monthly drop ever.

Aeon, Japan's No.2 retailer, slashed its outlook Wednesday and warned of its first net loss in seven years, while Takeshi Niinami, CEO of chain Lawson, says 2009 will be harsh.

[Takeshi Niinami, CEO of chain Lawson]:
"I think the new government in the U.S. will pick up the world economy to some extent towards the end of the year. So, I believe consumer spending of this country will pick up toward the end of this year -- a little
bit."

Japanese consumers are sharply cutting back spending except for necessities to weather the tough economic time.

Travel, even with a strong yen, is seen as a luxury, and JAL CEO Haruka Nishimatsu says it will take some time to revive air demand.

[Haruka Nishimatsu, CEO JAL]: "Until the end of 2009 the outlook is grim, but there is a sense among
U.S., Japanese, Chinese and European governments that fiscal measures are needed, so that may have some impact."

JAL and Japanese retailers are trying their own pump-priming moves, cutting prices and using new year campaigns, such as the traditional "lucky bags", to lure customers back for all of 2009.

Falun Gong Book Put on Russian Black List

 <length_seconds>245</length_seconds>

In Russia, members of a spiritual group persecuted in China are facing increasing levels of discrimination by their own government. The main text of Falun Gong, also known as Falun Dafa, was recently named an extremist publication by Russia's Ministry of Justice. That means if people are found selling or even owning the book, they could be fined. Here's more on the story.
STORY:
The Russian Falun Dafa Association says this action follows a pattern of discrimination against the human rights of Falun Gong practitioners in Russia.

[Sun Lezhi, Russian Falun Dafa Association]:
The decision of the court in Krasnodar and the actions of Ministry of Justice are illegal and baseless, we dont acknowledge it and are going to file an appeal.

The main text of Falun Gong, titled Zhuan Falun, has been translated into more than 40 languages. The Russian version was published 10 years ago and was approved by the Russian Ministry of Education in 2000. The text teaches people to be compassionate, tolerant, and truthful.

[Irina Oshirova, Russian Falun Dafa Association]:
I have been cultivating for about 12 years. From Zhuan Falun I realized a lot of things: Why I have to be compassionate and clean-living in this life; why I cant lie or steal, why I cant retaliate when I am hit or sworn at, why I should look within when a conflict happens, and why I shouldnt criticize others.

Author of the Book Mr. Li Hongzhi was twice nominated for the Nobel Prize.

[Sun Lezhi, Russian Falun Dafa Association]:
The book is about how to follow the principles of Truthfulness, Compassion and Tolerance. After reading this book many pepple have quit using drugs and alcohol and stopped smoking. This book can help raise the morality of human society, and it has been published around the world. It brings society 100 percent good, and no harm.

[Julyana Kim, practitioner of Falun Gong from Moscow]:
"I have benefitted a lot physically from the practice of Falun Gong. By now, I have practically forgotten about all the illnesses I used to suffer from, such as osteochondrosis and pharyngitis".

Lawyer Mikhail Sinitsyn is helping Falun Dafa followers to resolve matters concerning the violation of their human rights. In his opinion, the court deliberately did not invite practitioners of Falun Gong to participate in the proceedings, because they would have proven to the court the positive influence of Falun Dafa on the spiritual and physical state of practitioners.

[Mikhail Sinitsyn, Lawyer]:
This court hearing violates the rights of Russian practitioners of Falun Dafa for free access to information, and the right to act according to their belief.

Sinitsyn added that neither the prosecutors office nor the Ministry of Justice made any direct claims against Falun Dafa.

[Sun Lezhi, Russian Falun Dafa Association:
Over the past four years the Chinese communist regime has been spreading slander about Falun Gong in Russia and exporting its persecution overseas, trying to win the Russian government over with economic benefits and trade deals. Unfortunately, Russian authorities have accepted its slander and lies and help spread them.

Also added to the list of extremist publications in Russia was a detailed investigative report by Canadians David Kilgour and David Matas on the practice of live harvesting of organs of Falun Gong adherents in China.

[Sun Lezhi, Russian Falun Dafa Association]:
Therefore, I think that the court decision and the actions of Ministry of justice turn the principles of good and evil upside down. Think about it, if society cannot tell good from evil, it will face great danger. I believe that the Chinese Communist regime will end soon, just like the Communist party of Soviet Union ended. I would not like the Russian government to be an accomplice in the crimes of the CCP. I wish for the well-being and a good future for the Russian nation.

An appeal by Russian Falun Gong practitioners against the judgment of the Krasnodar Court will be filed in the near future.

Nationwide Truckers Strike in India

 <length_seconds>104</length_seconds>

In India, a nationwide strike of tens of thousands of truckers continues on its third day. So far, it has affected food prices and the livelihood of market workers. Lets have a look.
The All India Motor Transport Congress, representing about 6 million trucks across the country, started an indefinite strike on Monday. They are demanding reduction of diesel prices and withdrawal of service tax on truckers.

The truckers vowed to stay off the roads until their demands are met.

Although the strike has not had a great impact so far, vegetable traders say the prices have slightly gone up at Azadpur, the city's biggest vegetable market.

[Ashok Kumar, Vegetable Trader]:
"The strike has led to a hike in prices of the vegetables."

The strike has also affected workers, employed by marked traders, who load and unload sacks of fruits and vegetables.

[Surender Yadav, Market Worker]:
"The strike has affected our livelihood. Earlier we used to get enough work, but these days there is less work."

More than 70 percent of freight in India moves by road. Truckers had benefited from a booming economy that required the transport of steel and cement for construction.

But the country's 200 thousand transport companies have been hit in recent months by a slowing economy, higher interest rates on vehicle loans and tougher competition from the railways.

India cut prices of petrol and diesel in December but its economy is slowing down, amid the global financial crisis.

Inflation at a near 10-month low, the truckers' strike may not have any long-term adverse effect.

Authorities said on Monday that they will exempt truckers from service taxes and were ready to consider restructuring their bank loans.

Falun Gong Book Put on Russian Black List

 <length_seconds>246</length_seconds>

CHAN:
In our top story today: Members of a spiritual group that's brutally persecuted in China are facing increasing levels of discrimination in Russia, and it's from their own government.

STORY:
On December 23, the Russian Ministry of Justice added several books to its list of what it calls "extremist publications."

Among them is the Russian edition of a book called Zhuan Falun, the main text of the Falun Gong spiritual practice. The book outlines the tenets of Falun Gong, which is also called Falun Dafa.

[Sun Lezhi, Russian Falun Dafa Association]:
"The book is about how to follow the principles of truthfulness, compassion and tolerance. After reading this book many people have quit using drugs and alcohol and stopped smoking. This book can help raise the morality of human society, and it has been published around the world. It brings society 100 percent good, and no harm."

So is this book an "extremist publication"? That's what Russian courts decided in a secret hearing, and the decision allowed the Ministry of Justice to add it to the extremist list. Being on this list means anyone caught selling it or owning it can be fined.

The Russian Falun Dafa Association says this action follows a pattern of discrimination against Falun Gong adherents' human rights in Russia.

[Sun Lezhi, Russian Falun Dafa Association]:
"The decision of the court in Krasnodar and the actions of Ministry of Justice are illegal and baseless, we dont acknowledge it and are going to file an appeal."

This book Zhuan Falun has been published in more than 40 languages. Its author, Mr. Li Hongzhi, has been twice nominated for the Nobel Prize.

[Julyana Kim, Moscow Falun Gong Practitioner]:
"I have benefitted a lot physically from the practice of Falun Gong. By now, I have practically forgotten about all the illnesses I used to suffer from."

Lawyer Mikhail Sinitsyn is helping Falun Gong practitioners resolve matters concerning the violation of their rights. In his opinion, the court deliberately did not invite Falun Gong to participate in the hearings because, he says, they would have proven the positive influence of Falun Gong.

[Mikhail Sinitsyn, Lawyer]:
"This court hearing violates the rights of Russian practitioners of Falun Dafa for free access to information, and the right to act according to their belief."

Sinitsyn says neither the prosecutor's office nor the Ministry of Justice made any direct claims against Falun Gong to justify the blacklisting... So what's behind the ruling? The Falun Dafa Association says it wasn't originally the Russian government, but rather the Chinese Communist Party, which severely persecutes the spiritual group inside China.

[Sun Lezhi, Russian Falun Dafa Association]:
"Over the past four years the Chinese communist regime has been spreading slander about Falun Gong in Russia and exporting its persecution overseas, trying to win the Russian government over with economic benefits and trade deals. Unfortunately, Russian authorities have accepted its slander and lies and help spread them."

Also added to the list of "extremist publications" in Russia was an investigative report by Canadians David Kilgour and David Matas. It details how China's state-run prisons harvest organs from living Falun Gong practitioners.

[Sun Lezhi, Russian Falun Dafa Association]:
"Therefore, I think that the court decision and the actions of Ministry of justice turn the principles of good and evil upside down. Think about it, if society cannot tell good from evil, it will face great danger. I believe that the Chinese Communist regime will end soon, just like the Communist party of Soviet Union ended.
New Chinese-Americans: In "Splendor," The Truth of Falun Gon

 <length_seconds>165</length_seconds>

"Ricky" Chen could be considered a normal teenager from Mainland China - he's been in the US for only about half a year.

Currently studying at a New York high school, Ricky decided to kick off the new year at the Brooklyn Academy of Music with a show celebrating the traditional culture of his homeland.

[Ricky Chen, Student]:

"I thought that it was really something new... because the New Year shows in Mainland China are often created just for government officials and VIPs. As for a normal person like myself, I feel like this show offered a lot of new, fresh ideas and a chance to understand a bit more. It was more relevant to me, and the meaning was quite deep as well."

But in the end, he found that the Chinese New Year Splendor also shed light on one of the most pressing, and controversial events taking place in today's China - the persecution of the spiritual practice Falun Gong. The program portraying this subject, "Heaven Awaits Us Despite Persecution" offers some of the show's most serious, and relevant moments.

[Ricky Chen, Student]:

"When I was really moved... well, particularly when I saw those Falun Gong practitioners in Mainland China being persecuted. In China we generally see just so much negative, anti-Falun Gong propaganda, yet really these people should be well-regarded; they're practicing spiritual cultivation, simply that, yet they've encountered this kind of persecution... and in the end, to see that these Falun Gong practitioners who've been brutally treated enter heaven and become Buddhas, I was just so moved."

For Ricky, the show gave the truth about an issue that the Chinese state-run media he's used to blanket in constant propaganda.

But for another of the day's attendees, it hit even closer to home: The show was a chance to see elements of his own story, played-out on the stage for all the world to view.

Mr. Cheng, who didn't give his first name for reasons of safety, is a Falun Gong practitioner who's recently come to the US from China after encountering harrassment for his spiritual beliefs.

[Mr. Cheng, Chinese Refugee]:

"I've now seen this show three times. This time, it's even more astounding. There is this kind of power that penetrates your heart and soul, and I couldn't stop crying. When I went to NTD's oil painting exhibit, I saw a painting and the feeling that I got from that was also very unprecedented. I started practicing Falun Gong in 1997 in mainland China, and I came here due to the persecution... I just came to the US in March."

Two Chinese citizens - the youth tired of discriminatory propaganda, and the family man and spiritual believer escaping persecution.

For both, it took a journey of thousands of miles to hear the truths that could not be expressed back in China. They saw the Chinese New Year Splendor in New York City, but it was like looking through a window to the country they'd just left.

This has been Ryan Mitchell reporting for NTD, New York.

 <length_seconds>71</length_seconds>

WONG:
Our reporters caught up with a few VIPs who took in Divine Performing Arts Chinese New Year Splendor in Brooklyn over the weekend. Let's see what they have to say.

STORY:
Divine Performing Arts Brooklyn shows have left some audience members pondering the inner meaning of traditional Chinese culture.

[Qiuyi Guo, Taipei Economic and Cultural Office]:
"China has these important cultural traditions, so to be able to have this show that in just one or two hours allows Chinese people to better understand the deep meaning of their own Chinese culture... I think it's a really wonderful show that's definitely worth everyone coming to watch."

[Milagros Ricourt, Sociology Professor]:
The songs were so deep and so philosophical.

For some who saw the show last year, the novelty was still there.

[Francis Alessandro, Civil Court Judge]:
"Its dynamite and spectacular.

Others are taking away the idea that changing your mindset can better your health.

[Hugh Maynard-Reid, Healthcare Professional]:
They spoke about compassion, forbearance. These are qualities I think are valuable not only for healing, but also for general living.

[Eric Adams, State Senator]:
"And you can't expect compassion to come to you if you don't extend it to others."

STORY:
[Darian Young, Model]:
"I saw it earlier this year at the Manhattan Center and some of the pieces that were in this show were not in the one that I saw. So I am looking forward to the Radio City one. It is going to be large."

[Eric Young, Music Manager]:
I am looking forward to the Radio City Hall show. I am actually looking forward to seeing or hearing the whole orchestra. Which I am just, I cant wait to hear that. That would be my keynote thing to hear.

[Christopher Milczirak, Opera Singer]:
This is a beautiful, colorful show.

[Pavlo Estrada, Property Investor]:
It's beautiful. Its divine.

Divine Performing Arts three international touring companies will come together for a huge performance at Radio City Music Hall on the 24th and 25th of January.

Apple CEO Says He's Healthy

 <length_seconds>106</length_seconds>

WONG:
Apple CEO Steve Jobs is reassuring investors that he is still healthy enough to continue leading the company. There have been concerns that the man who oversaw the creation of the iPod and the iPhone, is looking a little thin.

STORY:
Apple CEO Steve Jobs has looked thinner in recent appearances, raising questions about his health and his future at the top of one of Silicon Valley's hottest companies.

But the man who helped introduce the world to the iPod - is breaking his silence.

Jobs says he is not stepping down as CEO - blaming his recent weight loss on a hormone imbalance that is being treated.

Some analysts found his comments reassuring - given his previous battle with pancreatic cancer.

Rick Hanna is an equity analyst with Morningstar.

[Rick Hanna, Equity Analyst]:
"Of course there has been a lot of uncertainty for sometime about his health, and we've been learning about his health in drips and drabs but it gives a little more detail; says that he's on a regimen that will allegedly improve it."

But his thinness, coupled with word that Jobs would not be the keynote speaker at this year's MacWorld product launch, reopened a debate, which punished the stock at the end of last year: How would Apple survive without Jobs?

Analysts say the iPhone, iPod and iMac are doing well and could keep doing so in the short term but it is the bigger picture that would be in jeopardy.

[Rick Hanna, Equity Analyst]:
"When Apple introduced the iPod that was something really Steve Jobs was intricately involved with. And it really was a transformational event there at the company."

But with Jobs now saying he's healthy enough to stay at the helm the debate has quieted down at least for now - giving the stock a modest bounce.

Chaotic European Weather

 <length_seconds>76</length_seconds>

STORY:
Anyone admiring the sight of Paris' Notre Dame cathedral would agree that freshly fallen snow is one of the most attractive parts of winter.

But it often spells trouble for drivers.

Snow fell overnight across Europe, including much of Germany, causing traffic chaos as many commuters returned to work after the Christmas break.

The severe weather conditions caused traffic jams during the early morning rush hour, like here on the A2 motorway near Magdeburg in eastern Germany - and here in Hamburg.

It was the same story in Belgium - with weather conditions causing tailbacks of up to 30 kilometers on the main roads leading into the capital Brussels.

At airports including Cologne and Charleroi in southern Belgium, flights were delayed or cancelled due to the snow.

And there could be more disruption to transport yet to come as temperatures are expected to plummet further in the next few days.

As for the lucky few who weren't at work - they were determined to have as much fun as possible in the wintry conditions.

Cambodias Killing Fields Remembered 30 Years Later

 <length_seconds>128</length_seconds>

Thousands of Cambodians gathered in Phnom Penh on Wednesday to mark the fall of Pol Pots ultra-Maoist Khmer Rouge regime 30 years ago. Around two million are believed to have died during what has become known as the Killing Fields.
Up to 80,000 people packed into the Olympic stadium in Phnom Penh for a rally organized by the ruling Cambodian People's Party, the descendant of the puppet government installed by Vietnam after its troops ousted
China-backed Pol Pot on Jan. 7, 1979.

As much as Cambodians loathe the Khmer Rouge for their genocidal attempt to create an agrarian paradise, many of them also mourn January 7th as the start of a 10-year occupation by their hated Vietnamese neighbors.

Some of the rally participants were too young to remember what life in Cambodia was like under the Khmer Rouge some were not yet born.

[Vong Leakenatevy, University Student]:
"I think that January 7 is my second birth. Although, I was not born during that regime I always heard about the suffering and killing from my parents. This is a special day for me and my parents. If we didn't have this
day, I would not be here."

The remnants of Pol Pot's black-shirted guerrilla army fled into the jungle along the Thai border until their final surrender in 1998.

But Pol Pots henchmen are only now being brought to justice in a joint Cambodian-United Nations tribunal.

The court admitted this week that Cambodia's prosecutor was blocking a bid by the prosecutor's international counterpart to go after more than the five top cadres now in custody on charges of war crimes and crimes against
humanity.

Those in custody are Brother Number Two Nuon Chea, former President Khieu Samphan, former Foreign Minister Ieng Sary, his wife, Ieng Thirith, and Duch, head of Phnom Penh's Tuol Sleng, or the "S-21" interrogation and torture center.

Understanding Cocaine Addiction

 <length_seconds>93</length_seconds>

WONG:
An interesting study to tell you about. An Australian scientist is doping up honeybees with cocaine to study how their brain reacts to the drug, and possibly find a way to stop addiction in humans.

STORY:
The research found similarities between honeybees and humans both are driven by rewards and both have their judgment altered by cocaine.

Report co-author Andrew Barron says its the first time it's been shown that cocaine has been rewarding to an insect.

Barren applied tiny doses of cocaine to the backs of bees before sending them out to hunt for food.

Normally when bees return from collecting pollen they perform a dance to communicate where the food was found and how good it tasted. The cocaine-induced honeybees "waggle danced" much more enthusiastically than other bees. They also seemed to experience the same addictive pleasures as humans.

[Andrew Barron, Report Co-author]:
"What we saw as I was video recording the dances was that when bees were treated with cocaine, when they came back from their foraging trip they were far more likely to dance, and they danced far more vigorously so it was really as if cocaine changed their estimation of how successful they had been in their foraging trip."

Barron hopes to identify the neural pathways that cocaine targets in bees to find out more about the mechanisms involved in human addiction. He also wants to find out whether the drug has as devastating an effect on bee society as it does on humans.

[Andrew Barron, Report Co-author]:
"If we could do that, we could possibly develop new treatments to prevent or treat addiction."

Barron also stresses that he does not endorse the use of cocaine in humans.
